The Department of Mathematics Education offers programmes in primary school mathematics teaching and mathematics teaching. The primary school mathematics teaching programme has offered a four-year undergraduate degree since 1998 and a two-year postgraduate degree since 2016. The Mathematics Teaching programme has offered a five-year undergraduate degree between 2006 and 2013, a four-year undergraduate degree since 2014, a two-year master's degree since 2016, and a four-year doctoral degree.
Our department has a staff of 16 academic personnel, including 8 professors, 2 associate professors, 2 lecturers, 3 research assistants, and 1 research fellow.
Over 500 students are enrolled in our department. Our graduates work as mathematics teachers in institutions teaching mathematics, primarily in middle and high schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, as lecturers and research assistants in higher education institutions, and in various positions in public institutions and the private sector.
Our programme, which awarded its first graduates in the 2001-2002 academic year, prepares students to teach primary school mathematics and mathematics in private and state-run secondary schools and upper secondary schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Graduates are knowledgeable about all psychological, physiological, and sociological aspects of adolescent development, aware of the cultural and historical background of upper secondary mathematics education, who have completed the educational sciences courses included in teacher training, have acquired a high level of fundamental mathematical knowledge and can apply the knowledge they have acquired, are capable of abstract thinking and can encourage others to think abstractly, have acquired mathematical analysis skills, possess knowledge in the field of mathematics education, use Turkish correctly in both written and spoken form as befits the teaching profession, have general cultural and historical knowledge, knows at least one foreign language, can effectively use the technological tools and equipment required by the age, is a lifelong learner; creative, critical, rational, reflective and able to think multidimensionally, free in mind and conscience, and possesses the skills, attitudes and competencies required for the role, status and duties of the teaching profession.
